POKER ITALIAN STYLE (i.e. on the Italian Riviera and with lots of hot chicks around)

NEWSFLASH:

The Italians love poker.  They'd like to marry it and have ten thousand of its babies.  If I’m wrong about that, than why were the registration lines for this tournament so long that they spilled out into the streets of the beautiful city on the Italian Riviera?  The record setting turn out makes you wonder why those government idiots (aka “The Man”) are trying to put a stop on online poker and the subsequent gambling that comes with it.

Why do people love poker so much?  And I don’t meant just playing… Why have the numbers of TV airings of big tournaments gone on the incline over the last few years?

Firstly, poker is a game of equal parts skill and luck.  It’s a game that can often favor the underdog… It’s a game that can turn expectations on their head.

Day One was filled with such surprises, including the elimination of some favorites... Annette Obrestad, Casey Kastle, Chad Brown, etc.  At least they get to feel sad on the Italian Riviera.  Way better than busting in Vegas…

Stuff I have thought about…

There are some noted big names and familiar faces around here… Patrick Antonius, Jonny Lodden, Noah Boken, etc.  Nice to see/hear familiar names/faces.

Evelyn Ng is out.  Maybe she prefers twittering the experience to actually, er, experiencing the experience.  She’s not the only one twittering the tournament.  I don’t get it… You wanna play poker?  Or you wanna write blurbs about poker?  See, me?  I’d rather write blurbs… Which is why I’M NOT PLAYING IN THE TOURNAMENT.

But I digress.

Ilari “Ziigmund” Sahamies is making a name for himself as a blind stealer.  In some countries, you can get cut for that sort of thing…

Julian Thew, a favorite coming into the tournament, isn’t having great luck but he seems to feel great about his chances still.  Optimism is awesome.  Except for if it goes badly… then it’s just sad.

Patrik Antonius is playing very quietly… I almost counted him out.  In all honesty, I thought he was eliminated… I am dumb.  I was lulled by his quiet… Then he walked onto a table and starting stealing chips…  That’ll teach me to count out the Lion.  He sure is pretty…

Keep an eye out for chip counts…
